Happy Wednesday. The AI agent standards race now has at least four competing protocols, and two of the biggest commerce platforms are signed onto more than one of them. That is the story underneath the Meta and Sierra announcement, and it matters more than any single coalition's launch.

The rest of today's issue covers Anthropic's expanded startup program and Atlassian's new agent protocol, both of which touch the same underlying question: how do AI systems earn and hold trust inside real workflows?

Four Competing Agent Standards and No Clear Winner Yet

Meta and Sierra Launch Open Standard to Define How AI Agents Shop for Consumers

Meta, Sierra, Walmart, Shopify, and Stripe announced the Personal Agent Protocol on Oct. 6, three weeks after Amazon blocked Meta's Muse shopping agent with a terms-of-service popup. PAP defines how agents authenticate, browse, and transact on behalf of consumers using OAuth sessions. Version 0.1 ships by end of October. Stripe and Shopify are already members of at least two other competing protocols.

No single standard controls this space. Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol, and Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol are all active. If you are building agent-facing commerce features, betting on one integration path is the wrong move. Watch the v0.1 reference implementation when it drops and build for multiple handshakes from the start.

Anthropic Pushes $7,000 in Direct Benefits to Early-Stage Founders

Anthropic Offers Startups a Free Year of Claude Team Plus $1,000 in API Credits

Anthropic expanded Claude Startups on Oct. 6, packaging 12 months of Claude Team for up to five seats with a one-time $1,000 API credit, totaling $7,000 in direct value. Startups connected to Anthropic's VC partner network can unlock up to $100,000 in additional API credits through their investor. The program is open to bootstrapped and pre-seed companies, not just venture-backed ones.

The credits expire six months after issuance and work only through Claude Console, not AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI. That last point is a real constraint if your infrastructure already runs on a cloud provider. The broader play here is straightforward: Anthropic is buying early-stage loyalty before those companies grow into the enterprise contracts that drive most of its revenue.

Atlassian Gives AI Agents an Identity and an Audit Trail in Jira and Confluence

Atlassian Launches Agentic Multiplayer Protocol to Put AI Agents Alongside Human Workers

Atlassian announced the Agentic Multiplayer Protocol at Team '26 Europe, giving AI agents distinct identities, scoped permissions, and visible presence in shared workspaces alongside humans. Every agent action generates an audit trail. The company reports that humans and AI agents interact on its platform more than 10 million times per month, and Rovo MCP Server hit 1 million monthly active users after doubling in one quarter.

The governance architecture is the part worth watching. Agents run under a user's own permissions or dedicated service accounts, and Rovo's long-running tasks require human approval at the plan stage and again at output. For enterprise software teams evaluating agent deployments, Atlassian's audit trail and checkpoint model sets a concrete reference point for what buyer procurement teams are likely to demand.
