Anthropic expanded its Claude Startups program on Oct. 6, adding financial benefits and technical support for founders building on its AI models. The announcement came during SF Tech Week, where Anthropic also hosted a Claude Founder House for networking, workshops, and coworking sessions.

The core package includes 12 months of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats, valued at $6,000 at list price, plus a one-time $1,000 API credit granted after acceptance. Combined, the direct Anthropic benefits reach $7,000 per company.

What Founders Get

Members also gain access to the Claude Startup Stack, a set of third-party discounts and credits from partners including Linear, Lovable, ElevenLabs, Granola, and Hex Analytics. Those partner offers total up to $45,000. Virtual office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team and access to the Claude Marketplace, where startups can build and submit plugins, round out the package.

The $1,000 API credit applies only to the first-party Claude API through Claude Console. It cannot be used on AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI. Credits expire six months after they are granted, and the Team subscription covers only organizations new to Claude Team.

Beth Robertson, Anthropic's head of startups, described the program's intent. "Startups are often the first to push Claude to its limits," Robertson said. "When a new model ships, they're ready that same day to take on projects that used to seem out of reach."

Who Can Apply

Applications are open to bootstrapped, pre-seed, and venture-backed companies alike. Applicants need a Claude Console account and a company email matching their website domain. Thousands of companies are already participating, according to Anthropic, which first launched the program in May.

Startups whose investors are part of Anthropic's VC partner network can unlock up to $100,000 in additional API credits through that relationship. Anthropic does not require VC backing to apply, which distinguishes it from some rival programs that route founders through their investors.

The Competitive Play

Anthropic competes for developer loyalty against OpenAI and Google, both of which run startup programs of their own. AI model providers across the board are using credit packages to secure early-stage relationships before those companies grow into large enterprise contracts.

Business customers account for the bulk of Anthropic's revenue. The expanded program is a direct push to embed Claude deeper into the startup ecosystem ahead of what observers expect will be a major IPO for the company.

Sarah Wolf, Anthropic's head of startup marketing, said in a post on X that the expanded benefits were developed in direct response to feedback from founders. Anthropic stated its broader rationale plainly: "We believe the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone."

Startups already building on Claude and featured on the program page include Lovable, Harvey, Cognition, Cursor, Glean, and Decagon.
