Square launched integrations with ChatGPT and Claude on July 1, letting consumers place restaurant orders without leaving an AI chat window. The move puts Square-enabled restaurants inside the moment customers are deciding where to eat.

When a user asks ChatGPT or Claude to find a nearby specialty coffee shop, the AI pulls live data from Square, including menus, modifiers, pricing, and stock availability. Customers can complete checkout inside the chat using Order by Cash App, or get redirected to the merchant’s online ordering page with their cart already populated.

Orders route directly into the seller’s Square Point of Sale and Kitchen Display System. The origin of each order is tagged as an AI integration inside Square’s backend reporting, so operators can track performance on the new channel.

Who Qualifies

Square Food and Beverage sellers in the U.S. with an activated Square Online Ordering profile are the first to go live. Enrollment is automatic. No new APIs, no additional configuration, and no extra marketplace fees are required.

Sellers manage their menus, hours, pricing, and stock levels through their existing Square Dashboard. The system maps all of that data in real time, so AI agents never show out-of-stock items to customers.

The Fee Advantage

Square is not charging the marketplace commissions that have long cut into restaurant margins. Standard Square online transaction fees apply: 3.3% plus $0.30 per transaction, or 2.9% plus $0.30 for merchants on Square Plus or Square Premium plans.

By contrast, DoorDash’s Premier plan charges 30% per order. Uber Eats charges up to 30% for premium placement. Grubhub ranges from 5% to 20%. Each platform stacks its own payment processing fee on top of those commissions.

For independent restaurants operating on net margins of 3% to 9%, a 30% commission on a $40 order can mean preparing food at a loss. Under Square’s model, that same order carries only the standard processing fee. If an AI-generated order requires delivery, Square dispatches through a white-label courier network that charges a flat fee, typically $7 to $10, rather than a percentage of the basket.

Pilot Partner Feedback

Square developed the integrations alongside Partners Coffee, a Brooklyn-based specialty coffee brand. Andrew Costaris, Digital VP at Partners Coffee, said the brand did not want its technology to complicate the customer experience or work against its mission of analog, experiential moments in its cafes.

“What Square has built not only allows our team to continue offering analog, experiential moments; it creates more of them,” Costaris said.

The Business Case

NielsenIQ research cited by Square shows 42% of consumers now use AI tools for shopping tasks including product discovery and comparison. Morgan Stanley projects that agentic shoppers could drive nearly $385 billion in U.S. e-commerce spending by 2030.

Square already works with more than 4.5 million sellers across search, maps, social, and marketplaces. The ChatGPT and Claude integrations extend that reach into AI chat, where purchase intent is high and the path to checkout has historically been broken.

Morgan Kuntze, Global Partnerships Lead at Block, Square’s parent company, said the investment in agentic commerce is meant to take the burden of keeping up with consumer behavior off operators. “Our investment into agentic commerce aims to offload that responsibility by giving operators time back, helping connect them with customers in their communities, and keeping them at the industry’s cutting edge,” Kuntze said.

For restaurant operators, the clearest business case is capturing orders that would otherwise never arrive. A customer asking an AI for coffee recommendations is already in buying mode. Square’s integration puts a direct path to checkout at that exact moment, without a 30% cut leaving the equation.
