OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-6 With Interactive Interfaces for 1.2 Billion Weekly Users

OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT on October 7, 2026, bringing a new feature called Intelligent UI to its chatbot for the first time. The company says the model was built for the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week.

Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers receive GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go users receive GPT-6 Luna. Both model variants were first released via API on September 22, 2026, 19 days after OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Astra.

What Intelligent UI Does

The Intelligent UI feature allows ChatGPT to generate responses that include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, and charts alongside or instead of plain text. OpenAI says the model selects the format based on the question, defaulting to text for simple prompts and using interactive elements when they would help the user explore a topic more deeply.

Users can request an interactive response at any time and the chatbot will reformat accordingly. Behind the feature is a library of native, streamable components and a compiler that builds the interface as the model generates its response, so elements appear progressively rather than all at once.

OpenAI demonstrated the feature with two examples. In one, a user asked how to assemble a seven-speed bicycle and received a visual breakdown of each part with clickable buttons to explore further. In a second, a user asked for a lamb roast plan and received a recipe that allowed them to adjust the number of guests to automatically recalculate ingredient quantities.

OpenAI says the capability can also place a cooking timeline beside a recipe, plot road-trip stops, or generate on-demand tools such as savings calculators, bill splitters, and in-chat games. Product Manager Aarush Selvan said the goal is to make "learning complex topics easier."

Speed and Search Improvements

For queries requiring web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. The model can also begin responding while it is still processing, building answers across partial responses.

OpenAI says GPT-6 makes better decisions about when to search the web and finds supporting information more reliably than its predecessor.

Pricing and Competitive Context

Sol is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Luna costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. Both represent a 50% price cut compared to GPT-5.6 rates.

OpenAI launched these API prices 90 minutes after Anthropic shipped a cheaper version of Claude Opus, underscoring an accelerating price war among major AI providers.

Safety and Limitations

OpenAI updated safety training for GPT-6 in areas covering cybersecurity threats, biological risks, and violence. The company reports stronger resistance to attempts to bypass safety restrictions compared to prior models.

The company acknowledged that both Sol and Luna showed some slippage on evaluations for age-restricted content, sexual content, and emotional reliance for users under 18. OpenAI's authors classified the production benchmark violations as borderline and low severity.

OpenAI also admitted that GPT-6's design judgment around when to use interactive versus text-only responses still needs improvement.

Education Features

OpenAI reported that since launching ChatGPT for Teens, those with access sent roughly 2.7 million more learning-related messages on average than those without. In one week, nearly 1.2 million teens used Learning Visualizations for math and science, and over 180,000 used Study Mode.

The company announced a College Planner tool coming soon to ChatGPT for Teens, along with flashcards, interactive quizzes, and note upload features for exam preparation.
