Quick Facts

  • OpenAI launched voice-based agentic features for ChatGPT mobile on September 23, 2026, extending the Work tab from desktop to iOS and Android.
  • Plus ($20/month) and Pro ($200/month) subscribers can draft emails, summarize Slack messages, and build presentations using voice commands tied to GPT-6 models.
  • ChatGPT surpassed 1 billion monthly active users in June 2026 and now counts over 1 million paying business customers worldwide.

OpenAI on Wednesday pushed voice-based agentic capabilities to its ChatGPT mobile app, allowing users to trigger multi-step work tasks through spoken commands. The update brings the Work tab, previously desktop-only, to iOS and Android for the first time.

Plus and Pro subscribers can now use voice to draft emails, create documents, summarize Slack messages, and build presentations directly from their phones. Free and Go users get access to plugins and connected apps, but not the full Work tab experience.

The update also enables plugin calls during live voice conversations. A user can say "Check my schedule for today" and ChatGPT will query a connected calendar app and respond aloud. Email and Slack integrations are also supported, letting users move between tools using only their voice.

New Models Power the Update

The mobile voice features run on OpenAI's three GPT-6 models: Astra, Sol, and Luna. OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as "the world's most intelligent and aligned model," with capabilities spanning computer use, software engineering, and professional work tasks.

Sol and Luna launched one day earlier, on September 22. Both are priced at roughly half the cost of their GPT-5.6 counterparts. Sol runs at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Luna costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens.

OpenAI also said voice conversations will now produce richer text output, making it easier to switch between spoken and written interaction in the same session. Cross-device workflows are supported, so a task started by voice on a phone can continue on desktop.

Enterprise Adoption Already in Motion

Workers at Nvidia, Zapier, RingCentral, and Virgin Atlantic were among the beta testers for ChatGPT Work before this release. Reported use cases include reviewing sales leads, checking product launch readiness across Jira, and automating event preparation.

The business numbers behind the rollout are large. OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active users as of February 2026, up from 400 million a year prior. Reuters reported the app crossed 1 billion monthly active users in June 2026. The company also counts more than 9 million paying business users, a fourfold increase from September 2025, and says 92% of Fortune 500 companies run on ChatGPT.

Output tokens generated by ChatGPT Enterprise customers grew roughly sevenfold between June 2025 and March 2026. That growth came from both new customers and deeper use within existing accounts.

What It Means for Founders and Operators

The mobile voice push removes a friction point that has slowed agentic AI adoption: workers move between devices and environments, and desktop-only tools break that flow. Bringing the Work tab to mobile means employees can initiate automated workflows from anywhere.

OpenAI closed a $122 billion funding round at an $852 billion valuation in March 2026, giving it the runway to keep expanding the platform. For software companies building on top of ChatGPT's plugin ecosystem, mobile voice access opens a new surface area for user engagement and workflow integration.

The voice agentic update follows the July 2026 launch of GPT-Live, a conversational voice model designed to make ChatGPT interactions feel more natural. OpenAI's rollout pace has accelerated: from the January 2025 Operator release to MCP support in September 2025 to the full mobile voice agent stack now available today.
