OpenAI announced June 11 it will acquire AI agent orchestration startup Ona to enhance its Codex platform’s enterprise capabilities. The deal brings Ona’s secure cloud execution technology into OpenAI’s rapidly expanding developer ecosystem.
Financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition requires regulatory approvals and both companies will remain independent until closing.
Ona, formerly known as Gitpod, provides cloud development environments used by 2 million developers. The company recently quadrupled enterprise annual recurring revenue year-over-year and secured a near eight-figure contract.
“Agents need more than intelligence; they need a trusted workspace,” said Johannes Landgraf, Ona’s CEO and co-founder. “We built Ona to give agents cloud environments with the context, control and collaboration enterprises require.”
The acquisition addresses a key challenge as Codex evolves beyond quick coding tasks. OpenAI says its most valuable work now unfolds over hours or days rather than minutes.
“Enterprises want powerful agents that can do real work while meeting the security and control requirements of their environments,” said Thibault Sottiaux, core products lead at OpenAI.
Codex has expanded beyond software developers to include plugins for sales, investment banking, and equity investing roles. Knowledge workers now represent one in five Codex users and are growing at more than triple the rate of the core developer group.
The move comes as OpenAI faces intensified competition from Anthropic, whose Claude Code assistant has driven strong growth. Anthropic closed a Series H funding round in May at a $965 billion valuation, slightly ahead of OpenAI’s $852 billion March valuation.
OpenAI has made several acquisitions recently, including cybersecurity startup Promptfoo in March, healthcare tech company Torch for roughly $60 million in January, and Jony Ive’s AI devices startup io for more than $6 billion in May 2025.
Ona customers report a 4x increase in development throughput. Last week, Ona co-authored 60% of pull requests merged and contributed 72% of lines of code merged for the company itself.
The agentic AI frameworks market is expected to grow from $2.99 billion in 2025 to $19.32 billion by 2031, according to industry forecasts.
