Mistral AI Seeks €3B Funding Round at €20B Valuation to Build European AI Infrastructure

Mistral AI is in talks to raise approximately €3 billion at a valuation of roughly €20 billion, according to Bloomberg reporting. The funding discussions remain at an early stage and terms may change based on investor demand.

The new valuation would nearly double the €11.7 billion Mistral achieved in September 2025 during its €1.7 billion Series C round. ASML, the Dutch semiconductor equipment giant, acquired an 11% stake for €1.3 billion in that round.

Since its 2023 founding, Mistral has raised over €2.8 billion in cumulative equity funding plus $830 million in debt financing secured in March 2026. The rapid valuation growth shows how quickly the European AI market has repriced, with Mistral more than tripling in value from its €5.8 billion Series B valuation in June 2024.

The company plans to use most of the new funding to build data centers. Mistral targets reaching 1 gigawatt of capacity by 2030 under its Mistral Compute program, which will serve European governments and enterprises seeking compute capacity outside US infrastructure. The company currently operates a 44-megawatt data center outside Paris and is building another in Sweden as part of a €1.2 billion data center expansion.

CEO Arthur Mensch told the French National Assembly in May 2026 that Europe must build its own AI infrastructure within two years or face permanent technological dependence on the US. He warned that continued reliance on American digital services could make Europe a ‘vassal state.’

Mistral secured major enterprise partnerships with Airbus, BMW, and EDF. The Airbus partnership focuses on embedding AI across commercial aircraft, helicopter, defense and space operations. BMW will use Mistral’s AI to improve crash simulations and vehicle development, leveraging more than one petabyte of historical simulation data.

The company acquired Emmi AI in May 2026 for approximately €300 million, bringing over 30 researchers specializing in physics-based AI models. Mistral is targeting €1 billion in revenue for 2026, up from €200 million the previous year.

Despite the growth, Mistral faces significant competition from US rivals. The company has raised about $4 billion total compared to OpenAI’s $186 billion and Anthropic’s $161.25 billion in funding. OpenAI’s most recent valuation reached $852 billion following a $122 billion funding round in March 2026, while Anthropic achieved a $965 billion valuation after raising $65 billion.
