Quick Facts

  • Microsoft and Nvidia created an AI ecosystem that reduced nuclear permitting time by 92% for one company, saving $80 million yearly
  • Data center electricity consumption is projected to double to 945 TWh by 2030, with AI accounting for up to 50% of data center power use
  • Nuclear licensing currently takes years and costs hundreds of millions of dollars, involving tens of thousands of pages of documentation

Microsoft and Nvidia announced a partnership to use artificial intelligence to break nuclear power construction bottlenecks. The collaboration aims to streamline permitting, accelerate design, and optimize operations across the nuclear industry.

Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith revealed the initiative at the CERAWeek conference in Houston. The companies created an AI ecosystem that integrates Nvidia’s Omniverse, Earth 2, CUDA-X, and other technologies with Microsoft’s Generative AI for Permitting Solution Accelerator and Planetary Computer platform.

The partnership already shows results. Aalo Atomics reduced its permitting process time by 92% using Microsoft’s AI solution, saving an estimated $80 million annually. The company’s Chief Technology Officer Yasir Arafat said the solution addresses “enterprise-scale complexity and mission-critical reliability.”

Nuclear permitting presents massive challenges. Current licensing takes years, costs hundreds of millions of dollars, and requires processing tens of thousands of documentation pages. Labor productivity in recent plants runs up to 13 times lower than industry expectations.

The timing addresses urgent power demands. Global data center electricity consumption will reach 945 TWh by 2030, representing 3% of total global electricity use. AI’s share of data center power consumption could jump from the current 5-15% to 35-50% by 2030. The International Energy Agency estimates AI-focused data center electricity demand grows at 30% annually.

Record investments in AI data centers hit $580 billion globally in 2025. Goldman Sachs projects this demand will boost core inflation by 0.1% in both 2026 and 2027. Average US household electricity bills could rise $15-25 monthly due to grid upgrade costs.

The AI tools identify documentation inconsistencies, unify construction lifecycle data, and support digital twins for virtual testing. Generative AI aligns new applications with past permits and simulates projects before construction begins.

Microsoft expanded the network through partners including Everstar and Atomic Canyon. Southern Nuclear uses Microsoft Copilot agents across engineering and licensing workflows. Idaho National Laboratory applies AI to assemble safety analysis reports and standardize review methods.

“The world is racing to meet a historic surge in power demand with an infrastructure pipeline built for the analog age,” Microsoft said. “Nuclear energy is the essential backbone for this future, but the industry remains trapped in a delivery bottleneck.”

Nuclear plants face a $60 million annual regulatory burden on average. Construction costs have increased dramatically, with “soft” factors external to reactor hardware contributing over half the cost increases between 1976 and 1987.

The Nuclear Energy Institute’s Doug True called the initiative “a powerful example of how innovation can unlock the full potential of nuclear energy.” Virginia alone consumes 24 TWh of annual data center electricity, followed by Texas at 17 TWh and Illinois at 12 TWh.
