  • Ineffable Intelligence raised $1.1 billion in seed funding at a $5.1 billion valuation, the largest European seed round ever
  • Founded by David Silver, former DeepMind lead who developed AlphaGo and AlphaZero
  • Company aims to build a ‘superlearner’ AI that discovers knowledge through experience rather than human-generated training data

London-based AI startup Ineffable Intelligence raised $1.1 billion in seed funding at a $5.1 billion post-money valuation, marking the largest seed financing ever raised by a European company. The round was co-led by Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

David Silver founded the company in November 2025 after leaving DeepMind, where he led reinforcement learning research for 13 years and developed breakthrough AI systems including AlphaGo and AlphaZero. Silver emerged from stealth on April 27, 2026.

The funding round included participation from Nvidia’s venture arm, which contributed at least $250 million according to The Next Web. Google, Index Ventures, DST Global, BOND, EQT, and the UK government’s Sovereign AI fund also invested.

Ineffable Intelligence plans to build what Silver calls a “superlearner” that discovers knowledge through its own experience rather than training on human-generated data. “Language is a compression of experience, not experience itself,” Silver said in a press briefing. “To reach superintelligence, we must build agents that learn from the ground up through trial, error, and discovery.”

The company has not released a product or generated revenue since its founding. Silver committed to donating 100% of his equity proceeds to charity through Founders Pledge, representing the organization’s largest pledge in history.

This funding reflects the current AI investment climate where multibillion-dollar valuations for pre-product companies have become standard. Crunchbase data shows investors poured $300 billion into 6,000 startups globally in Q1 2026, up over 150% year-over-year and marking an all-time high for venture investment.

The round positions Ineffable Intelligence as a major bet on reinforcement learning as an alternative path to artificial general intelligence, challenging the industry’s current focus on large language models trained on human text.

UK Science and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the investment “will support a company at the very frontier of AI, with the potential to transform entire sectors, underlining our determination to ensure that the UK isn’t just an AI taker but an AI maker.”
