ChatGPT crossed 900 million weekly active users as OpenAI announced the largest private financing round in history. The AI startup raised $110 billion at a pre-money valuation of $730 billion, bringing its total valuation to $840 billion.
Amazon led the funding with a $50 billion commitment, starting with $15 billion upfront and an additional $35 billion when certain conditions are met. Nvidia and SoftBank each invested $30 billion.
The user milestone represents explosive growth. OpenAI added 100 million weekly users since October 2025, with January and February tracking as the largest months for new subscribers in company history. The platform now has more than 50 million consumer subscribers and over 9 million paying business users.
“ChatGPT is where people start with AI, with more than 900 million weekly active users,” OpenAI announced. Weekly users of its coding tool Codex tripled since the start of the year to 1.6 million.
CEO Sam Altman said the funding will support massive infrastructure needs. “AI is going to happen everywhere. It’s transforming the whole economy, and the world needs a lot of collective computing power to meet the demand,” Altman said.
The deal expands OpenAI’s partnership with Amazon Web Services by $100 billion over eight years. AWS will serve as the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI’s enterprise platform Frontier.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy called OpenAI “one of the very big winners” in AI. “It’s so early right now in the AI space, and OpenAI is off to an amazing start,” Jassy said.
ChatGPT maintains roughly two-thirds of the generative AI chatbot market despite growing competition. Google’s Gemini doubled its market share to 14-15% over the last 12 months, though ChatGPT’s growth rate of 6% monthly still outpaces most platforms.
OpenAI projects $280 billion in revenue by 2030, split equally between consumer and enterprise businesses. The company targets $600 billion in total compute spending by 2030 to support its infrastructure needs.
The milestone puts ChatGPT within striking distance of one billion weekly users, cementing its position as the fastest-growing consumer technology platform in history.
