Quick Facts

  • Claude Design launched April 17 as a research preview, causing Figma stock to drop 7.3% and Adobe to fall 2.7%
  • The tool creates visuals through conversation and exports to PDF, PPTX, HTML, or directly to Canva for further editing
  • Customers report compressing week-long design projects into single conversations using the new platform

Anthropic launched Claude Design on April 17, triggering immediate selloffs in design software stocks as investors assessed the competitive threat to established players.

Figma fell as much as 7.28% to $18.84 from a prior close of $20.32. Adobe dropped 2.7%, while Wix declined 4.7% and GoDaddy fell 3%. The reaction reflects concerns about AI disruption in the $50 billion design software market.

Claude Design runs on Claude Opus 4.7, Anthropic’s latest vision model. Users create prototypes, slides and graphics through conversation rather than manual design work. The tool exports to PDF, PPTX, HTML or sends projects directly to Canva through a partnership integration.

The platform applies company design systems automatically by reading codebases and design files. Users refine outputs through inline comments, direct edits or custom sliders that Claude creates for adjusting colors, spacing and layouts.

Early customers report dramatic productivity gains. Brilliant said pages requiring “20+ prompts to recreate in other tools only required 2 prompts in Claude Design.” Datadog described compressing “a week of back-and-forth between briefs, mockups, and review rounds” into a single conversation.

The launch represents Anthropic’s expansion beyond conversational AI into specialized enterprise tools. Mike Krieger, Instagram co-founder, joined as co-lead of Anthropic Labs in early 2026 after serving as chief product officer.

“Mike’s background in developing intuitive products and user experiences will be invaluable as we create new ways for people to interact with Claude, particularly in the workplace,” said Dario Amodei, Anthropic CEO.

Krieger resigned from Figma’s board on April 14, three days before Claude Design launched. The timing raised questions about potential conflicts of interest as Anthropic directly challenges Figma’s design workflow dominance.

Figma controls an estimated 80% to 90% of the UI and UX design market for websites and applications. Industry observers called Claude Design the first credible threat to remove Figma from the initial design workflow since the company’s 2012 founding.

Claude Design uses Canva’s Design Engine through a two-year partnership that began in July 2025. The integration applies corporate brand rules automatically and generates on-brand visuals from text descriptions.

The tool is available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans with separate usage tracking and weekly limits. Bloomberg reported VCs offered Anthropic funding rounds valuing the company at $800 billion, nearly matching OpenAI, though Anthropic declined the offers.
