Quick Facts
- Anthropic launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta on Oct. 6, 2026, available to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plan users.
- Claude can read, edit and create Google Docs, Sheets and Slides from a sidebar, or users can open and edit those files directly inside Claude.
- The integration follows Claude's general availability inside Microsoft 365 apps in May 2026, making Anthropic present across both major productivity suites.
Anthropic released a first-party Google Workspace add-on on Oct. 6, 2026, placing Claude inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. The integration is in public beta and marks the first time Anthropic has shipped a native connection between Claude and Google's productivity suite, separate from third-party add-ons that previously offered similar access.
The integration works in both directions. Users can open a Google file and interact with Claude in a sidebar alongside it. They can also start inside Claude, paste a file link or ask Claude to create a new document, and work on it from there.
What Claude Can Do Inside Each App
In Docs, Claude can rewrite sentences or reformat headings without touching surrounding text. Larger changes appear as proposed edits in the sidebar for user review before they go live.
In Sheets, Claude writes formulas, builds pivot tables and native charts, and creates new tabs. For data-heavy jobs like joining datasets or cleaning messy inputs, Claude can pull spreadsheet ranges into Python, process the work there and write results back into the sheet.
In Slides, Claude generates new slides that follow the existing presentation design. It also flags layout problems such as overlapping elements or hard-to-read text.
User Control and Enterprise Access
The default mode, called "Ask before edits," requires human approval before any change goes into a file. Users can switch to "Accept all edits" to let Claude complete a task without pausing. Anthropic stated: "You decide how much Claude does on its own."
Enterprise plan customers keep access to the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export. Administrators can deploy the add-on to specific domains or groups through the Google Admin console. The same models, connectors and skills available in the main Claude application carry over into the sidebar.
Known beta limits include a six-minute cap on long operations, no Firefox support, and no compatibility with third-party inference providers such as Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI or Azure AI Foundry.
Competition With Gemini and Copilot
The release puts Claude in direct competition with Google's own Gemini assistant, which already has a side panel inside Docs, Sheets and Slides. Anthropic is asking Workspace users to add a competing AI model to Google's environment rather than leave it.
For Google, the built-in distribution of Gemini is a structural advantage. For Anthropic, the bet is that some enterprise customers want Claude's models and existing Claude connectors while keeping their files in Google's formats.
The Google Workspace launch follows Claude's general availability inside Microsoft 365 on May 7, 2026, covering Excel, Word and PowerPoint, with Outlook in public beta at that time. That release made Claude the first non-Microsoft AI model to ship as a native add-in across the full Office suite. A feature of that integration is cross-app context: Claude retains information from an Outlook session when a user switches to Excel or PowerPoint.
Anthropic's Broader Platform Push
Anthropic now distributes Claude through the consumer chat interface at claude.ai, through its developer API and through native integrations inside both Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. The company has framed its direction clearly: "At Anthropic, we're laser-focused on enterprise workers and use cases."
The Google Workspace add-on is available now through the Google Workspace Marketplace. Anthropic has not disclosed adoption targets or revenue figures tied to the beta.
