AI Agent Traffic Surpasses Human Web Traffic for First Time in Internet History

AI agents have overtaken humans in web traffic for the first time in internet history, according to data from Cloudflare. The milestone marks a fundamental shift in how the internet operates and validates aspects of the controversial “dead internet” theory.

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince announced the development on X, stating that “agentic traffic growing so fast that bots have now passed human traffic online for the first time in the Internet’s history.” Cloudflare Radar data shows agentic bots now account for 57.4% of all web traffic.

The growth rate stunned industry experts. Prince originally predicted the crossover would happen in late 2027, then revised his estimate to early 2027. The actual timeline accelerated dramatically beyond those projections.

Explosive Growth Across Industries

HUMAN Security analyzed over 1 quadrillion interactions and found automated traffic grew 23.5% year-over-year in 2025. That rate was eight times faster than human traffic growth of 3.1%.

AI agent traffic exploded by 7,851% year-over-year. More than 95% of AI-driven traffic concentrated in three industries: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, and travel and hospitality.

“The internet as a whole was created with this very basic notion that there’s a human being on the other side of the computer screen, and that notion is very rapidly being replaced,” said Stu Solomon, CEO of HUMAN Security.

Business Model Disruption

The shift creates major challenges for internet business models. Prince noted that “bots don’t click on ads,” raising questions about advertising revenue that powers much of the web.

Publishers face increased server loads from AI crawlers scraping content for training data. These crawlers often provide no corresponding referral traffic or revenue.

Security concerns are mounting. Post-login account compromise attempts quadrupled to an average of 402,000 per organization. Malicious scraping now approaches 20% of all traffic, nearly double the 2022 rate.

Strategic Implications

Businesses must adapt their strategies for an AI-dominated web. Companies that structure their data clearly and make information machine-readable will appear in AI-generated recommendations. Those that don’t risk becoming invisible to a growing segment of buyers.

“Unquestionably trusting novel technology like agentic AI could lead to risks such as compromised credentials, data misuse, and unintended consequences when shopping,” said Lindsay Kaye, VP of Threat Intelligence at HUMAN Security.

The data validates core aspects of the “dead internet” theory, which suggests automated systems increasingly dominate online activity. Academic Hal Berghel discussed a “leaner” version of the theory in 2026, focusing on evidence rather than conspiracy elements.

Prince remains divided on whether this proves the theory. “I think a lot of people kind of have said, ‘Well, this has proved sort of the dead internet theory.’ I think that’s actually kind of wrong at a lot, a lot of levels.”
