Anthropic announced Wednesday that Claude Cowork, its agentic workspace product, is being retired as a separate experience. Its capabilities will merge into the standard Claude chat interface, reducing Claude’s modes from three to two: Claude Chat and Claude Code.
The company said the decision came from user feedback. ‘We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work. People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged,’ Anthropic said in its announcement.
In the unified experience, users describe what they need and Claude determines whether the request calls for a quick answer or a longer task such as a research report, spreadsheet, or presentation. Finished files come back editable, including spreadsheets with working formulas and presentations that open directly in PowerPoint.
New Products in Beta
Claude Docs, launching in beta, allows users to request a document and continue working on it collaboratively. Claude can draft sections, ask clarifying questions, and comment on choices. Colleagues can edit the same document at the same time. Documents start as private and can be shared with specific users or more broadly across an organization.
Claude Slides lets users request a presentation deck from within a standard Claude conversation, edit individual slides, and present directly from Claude. This product is separate from Claude for PowerPoint, Anthropic’s existing Microsoft add-in.
Claude Design, which Anthropic launched in April 2026 using Canva’s design engine, will also move into the main conversation rather than remain a separate tool. Users can export documents to Google Docs or Microsoft Word and presentations to PowerPoint or PDF.
What Stays the Same
Claude Code, built for developers working in terminals and IDEs, is not part of the merger and remains a distinct product. Existing Cowork data is preserved: chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills carry over to the unified experience. Documents and slides remain shareable by link and editable on mobile.
The unified interface supports connections to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, HubSpot, QuickBooks, PayPal, Canva, and DocuSign.
Enterprise and Competitive Stakes
The move puts Anthropic in direct competition with OpenAI, which launched ChatGPT Work in July 2026, combining its chatbot with the Codex coding tool. Google Gemini already creates and edits documents inside Google Docs and Slides.
Anthropic’s approach keeps drafting, revisions, and exports together rather than replacing office suites outright. Supporting Google Docs, Word, and PowerPoint formats directly reduces friction for enterprise buyers already relying on Microsoft and Google productivity tools.
The timing matters. According to Ramp’s September 2026 AI Index, 43.8% of U.S. businesses purchased Anthropic subscriptions or API tokens in August, compared with 39.8% for OpenAI. Claude Code alone reached $2.5 billion in annualized revenue by February 2026. The Financial Times has reported that Anthropic expects positive adjusted operating income for a second consecutive quarter as it prepares for an initial public offering.
Pro and Max subscribers will receive the unified experience on web, desktop, and mobile first. Enterprise administrators have at least 30 days’ notice before the change reaches their accounts. Team and Free users follow in a later phase.
