Anthropic has updated Claude Tag, its Slack-native AI agent, to read entire conversation threads rather than evaluating messages one at a time. The change makes the agent roughly 30% more accurate at deciding when to enter a conversation on its own, according to the company.
Claude Tag launched on June 23, 2026. Anthropic began migrating workspaces from its older Slack integration on Aug. 3, 2026. The updated agent is available in beta for Team and Enterprise customers.
Scott White, Anthropic’s head of product for enterprise, told VentureBeat the update reflects a broader shift the company calls “multiplayer AI.” The idea is that AI agents should work across teams and organizational data, not just for individual users.
“Claude used to feel like your personal chief of staff,” White said. “Now Claude, in the context of organizational deployment, feels like the company’s chief of staff.”
Once installed in a Slack workspace, Claude Tag acts as a persistent channel member. Any team member can tag @Claude in a thread. Claude responds in that same channel, visible to all participants. Anyone can pick up the conversation where a colleague left off.
The agent builds context over time as it follows channel activity. With permission, it can pull data from additional Slack channels and connected data sources, though it does not access private channels.
Claude Tag also includes an ambient mode. In this mode, the agent enters conversations without being tagged, flagging issues, surfacing updates from across the organization, and following up on forgotten threads or tasks.
White pointed to site reliability engineering as a primary use case. Claude collects error logs, connects them to recent code changes and related Slack discussions, then surfaces a synthesis and pulls in the relevant team members. Cat Wu, Anthropic’s head of product for Claude Code, told Reuters: “The form factor of being able to tag it the same way that you would a coworker is really powerful.”
White attributed the update to three factors: the Model Context Protocol (MCP) Anthropic introduced in late 2024, which gives Claude governed access to enterprise data systems; a threshold of model intelligence that makes proactive behavior useful rather than disruptive; and Slack’s form factor as a persistent workspace platform. OpenAI and Google adopted MCP in 2025.
Anthropic says its internal product group now generates 65% of its code through a private version of Claude Tag. Claude Code’s run-rate revenue has grown to over $2.5 billion, more than doubling since the beginning of 2026, with enterprise customers now accounting for more than half of that total.
Amit Jena, AI development manager at IT consulting firm Kanerika, said the update addresses real engineering workflow problems. “For engineering teams, Claude Tag will help reduce time spent on debugging through fragmented Slack discussions, summarizing long incident threads, pulling context across repos, tickets, and logs, and documenting decisions after the fact,” he said.
The enterprise AI market remains uneven. A McKinsey State of AI survey found that 88% of organizations report using AI in at least one function and 62% are experimenting with AI agents, but only 39% attribute any earnings impact to AI. Just 6% qualify as high performers seeing significant value.
Anthropic’s enterprise adoption rate stood at 34.4% in May 2026, according to corporate expense platform Ramp’s AI Index, ahead of OpenAI’s 32.3%. The audit trail built into Claude Tag, which logs every scheduled task and network call made using Agent Identity, may help the company win over compliance-conscious enterprise buyers who remain cautious about autonomous agents acting inside their systems.
