Anthropic on Wednesday introduced Claude Tag, a Slack-based AI service that functions as a shared assistant for entire teams rather than individual users. Available in beta for Claude Enterprise and Claude Team customers, the product runs on Claude Opus 4.8 and replaces the company’s existing Claude in Slack integration.
The shift is significant. Where the previous integration served individual users in direct messages and threads, Claude Tag operates under an organization-level identity. Admins define which tools, data sources, and channels each Claude instance can access. Usage is billed to the organization, not to individual employees.
Teams can tag @Claude in any permitted channel, assign tasks, and step away. Claude can autonomously pursue those tasks over hours or days, then post results back into the thread. Other team members can see the work in progress and pick it up where a colleague left off.
The Ambient Mode Distinction
The feature that separates Claude Tag from a conventional chatbot is ambient mode. Claude monitors the channels it has been assigned to and proactively surfaces reminders, summaries, or context pulled from other parts of the organization. It does not wait to be asked.
Cat Wu, Anthropic’s Head of Product for Claude Code, described the form factor as the key innovation. “A lot of the capabilities did exist, but actually the form factor of being able to tag it the same way that you would a coworker is really powerful,” she said. Wu gave her own Claude Tag access to Gmail so it reads her messages, flags important emails, and posts alerts to her on Slack.
Rob Seaman, General Manager of Slack, framed the product as a move away from private AI interactions. “Instead of a private back-and-forth, Claude Tag shows up in the open,” he said.
Admin Controls and Security
Organizations can create separate Claude instances for different departments to isolate information. A Claude configured for legal work cannot seed memories into the engineering channel, for example. Administrators gain access to activity logs, completed task reviews, and spending controls at both the organization and channel level.
The existing Claude in Slack application will be retired on August 3, 2026. Current users have a 30-day migration window, and eligible customers will receive introductory credits to evaluate the new product.
Market Position and Revenue
The launch comes as Anthropic reports strong commercial momentum. Claude Code’s run-rate revenue has grown to over $2.5 billion, more than doubling since the start of 2026. Enterprise use now accounts for more than half of all Claude Code revenue.
Anthropic also pulled ahead of OpenAI in corporate subscriptions in May, according to Ramp Business Corp.’s AI Index, which tracks spending data from more than 50,000 U.S. companies. Claude subscriptions were held by 34.4% of those firms, compared with 32.3% for OpenAI tools.
Deloitte’s deployment of Claude across more than 470,000 employees in 150 countries illustrates the enterprise scale Anthropic is targeting. Anthropic says it plans to expand Claude Tag to other platforms beyond Slack over time.
