Cursor today launched Cursor 3, a major update to its AI coding platform that introduces autonomous programming agents. The new version allows developers to deploy AI agents that complete tasks independently, marking a shift from traditional coding assistance to full task automation.
The platform now includes a chatbot interface that manages multiple AI agents running both in the cloud and on local machines. Developers can control these agents through a centrally managed sidebar interface.
“We think of this less like a new feature and more like, ‘This is what it’s going to look like working with agents,’” said Jonas Nelle, Cursor’s co-head of engineering for asynchronous agents. “They’re not just writing software, writing code, they’re sort of becoming full software developers.”
The update includes Design Mode, which lets developers select interface elements and describe changes in natural language. Cursor’s AI agents then automatically implement the requested modifications.
Cursor reported crossing $2 billion in annual revenue, doubling over the past three months. The San Francisco company now serves over 1 million daily active users and powers more than 50,000 businesses, including over half of the Fortune 500.
The platform has achieved significant automation rates. Roughly 35% of Cursor’s pull requests are now generated by agents operating on virtual machines. The system supports up to 10 parallel workers per user and 50 per team.
“Instead of having one to three things that you’re doing at once that are running at the same time, you can have 10 or 20 of these things running,” said Alexi Robbins, co-head of engineering for asynchronous agents at Cursor.
The company faces growing competition from Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, which has over 26 million users, Anthropic’s Claude Code with $2.5 billion in run-rate revenue, and OpenAI’s Codex with more than 1.5 million weekly active users.
Cursor maintains approximately 25% market share among generative AI software buyers. The company was founded in 2022 by MIT students and now employs over 300 people.
