- The company now generates $2 billion in monthly revenue with 900 million weekly active users
- Amazon invested $50 billion while Nvidia and SoftBank each contributed $30 billion to the round
OpenAI has closed a record-breaking $122 billion funding round that values the artificial intelligence company at $852 billion. The round represents the largest funding event in Silicon Valley’s history.
Amazon led the massive investment with $50 billion, while Nvidia Corp. and SoftBank Group Corp. each contributed $30 billion. SoftBank co-led the round alongside other investors including Andreessen Horowitz and D. E. Shaw Ventures. Individual investors contributed nearly $3 billion through bank channels.
The funding comes as OpenAI reports explosive growth across key metrics. The company now generates more than $2 billion in monthly sales, up from $1 billion per quarter at the end of 2024. ChatGPT supports over 900 million weekly active users, including more than 50 million subscribers.
“AI is driving productivity gains, accelerating scientific discovery, and expanding what people and organizations can build,” OpenAI said in a release. “This funding gives us the resources to continue to lead at the scale this moment demands.”
Business customers now represent 40% of OpenAI’s revenue, up from 30% last year. The company projects enterprise revenue will match consumer revenue by the end of 2026. OpenAI’s APIs process more than 15 billion tokens per minute.
The company positions itself as an “AI superapp” that will unify ChatGPT, its coding tool Codex, browsing capabilities, and agent features into a single interface. OpenAI shut down its Sora video generation application to focus resources on productivity tools, particularly coding agents.
CEO Sam Altman told employees in February that ChatGPT had returned to “exceeding 10% monthly growth.” The company’s coding product Codex grew 50% in a single week, with Altman calling the growth “insane” in internal communications.
OpenAI has expanded its revolving credit facility to $4.7 billion, providing additional financial flexibility for infrastructure investments. The company continues to spend heavily on AI chips, data center infrastructure, and talent acquisition.
The funding round positions OpenAI for a potential initial public offering while intensifying competition with Google’s Gemini and Anthropic. The massive valuation reflects investor confidence in frontier AI models despite enormous compute costs.
OpenAI’s new advertising business has generated over $100 million in annual recurring revenue just six weeks after launch, monetizing its large base of non-paying users.
